We offer a wide range of activities designed to engage residents both socially and creatively. Visiting hairdressers and a chiropodist are available for those who wish to use their services, and we regularly arrange events chosen or suggested by our residents. Occasionally, we invite groups or performers to entertain with music, theatre, or song.
Social activities take place most days and are open to residents and family members who wish to participate. These include gentle exercise sessions, afternoon bingo, quizzes, sing-alongs, reading, poetry, concerts, music events, parties, and a wide variety of card and board games.
We enjoy a lively programme of seasonal events throughout the year. Summer brings relaxed barbecue gatherings in the garden, while the colder months feature winter celebrations, fireworks night and festive activities. We also welcome regular live music, visiting performers and themed events that add variety and joy to life at Penhill.
The outreach library service calls regularly with large print books and audio materials for those who enjoy reading or listening, and a small Church service, including Holy Communion, is also held for residents who wish to attend.
We are proud of our strong connections within the local community. Residents frequently attend events at the Village Hall, and we are now working with The Scrap Store, where we have been given a complimentary membership to support creative activities. We also maintain close links with St Mary’s Church, providing opportunities for social and spiritual engagement beyond the home.
At Penhill, we prioritise the health and wellbeing of all our residents. Weekly ward rounds are conducted by a GP to monitor resident’s health conditions and ensure any medical needs are addressed promptly.
We work closely with a local GP Surgery and Pharmacy to provide coordinated, professional care. Our staff are fully trained in medication administration, assisting residents with their prescriptions at the correct intervals and managing all associated records.
We also maintain comprehensive personal care plans for each resident using a secure electronic care management platform, ensuring that all aspects of care are accurately recorded and easily accessible to our team.
All of our food is freshly home-cooked daily by a qualified chef who excels in providing meals to meet the individual requirements of our residents. We pride ourselves on offering a daily selection of locally-sourced, high quality meals that are served to residents either in the dining room or their rooms depending on their preference.
A selection of snacks, fruit and drinks are available at all times.
Life at Penhill has a gentle rhythm rather than a fixed timetable. Meals are freshly prepared each day and served within a comfortable window — residents can join others in the dining room or have meals brought to their room, entirely as they prefer. Activities take place most days and are open to everyone, though there is never any expectation to participate.
The rest of the day is simply theirs. Whether that means a morning in the garden, an afternoon with family, or a quiet day in their room, we follow each resident’s lead. Routines evolve naturally over time as we get to know each person better.
Long-term residential care is at the heart of what we do, with limited respite stays when availability allows.
Penhill is a permanent home for older people who need support with daily living. Our 19 residents enjoy person-centred care, comfortable surroundings and the security of an experienced, long-serving team. Each new resident begins with a 4-week trial period to ensure Penhill is the right fit.
We do offer short-stay respite care in Bristol when a room is available, providing temporary support after a hospital stay or while a regular carer takes a break. Because Penhill is a small home that is consistently full, respite availability is limited — please call us to check current availability.
